Mercredi après-midi à Vaux le Vicomte

In France, there is no school on Wednesdays.  It's not always easy for parents to know how to best organize these "off" days.  Karen and I are trying something new.  Every other Wednesday afternoon, I get to take one of our older two boys to the destination or activity of his choice. 

Last week, Mikey chose to go to a fast food restaurant with an enormous play structure.  As much fun as we had, the globalized nothingness of what George Ritzer calls a "nonplace" did not inspire me to take any pictures.  I'll try to do better next week.  Mikey wants to go to the aquarium.

This week, Sami chose le Chateau Vaux le Vicomte, a unique "place" that demands attention, reflection and did inspire a few photos taken with the iphone.   Sami's favorite room featured original manuscripts of Jean de la Fontaine fables.

Lest you get the false impression that my oldest son is overly serious for a 7 year old, his favorite activity was to pick the noses of the regal statues in the immaculately manicured gardens.  We braved the rain and walked all the way to the enormous (10 meters high!) Hercules statue at the southern-most end.  We could not reach his nose.

It was a happy, happy day...  If you're thinking I got the best end of our Wednesday-parental-organization deal...  well, you're probably right...  but until I can breastfeed or until Nathanaël starts taking bottles, this is what Karen says helps her the most.   I'm looking forward to adding Nate to our schedule of père et fils outings.  I can't help but wonder what he'll choose to do together...just him and his papa.
